Gardai not treating Rosmuc fire death as suspicious

A house fire in Rosmuc which resulted in the death of a 73-year-old man is not being treated as suspicious by gardai.

The deceased man has been named as Bartley Breathnach. The retired postman, who has been described as being a popular figure in south Connemara, had been alone in his home in Lower Camus when the blaze broke out on Monday June 2.

According to Galway Garda Station, Mr Breathnach, a single man, had last been seen tending to his stock at about 8.30pm. The alarm was later raised when neighbours spotted the signs of fire and contacted the emergency services at about 11.50pm. It is understood that two units of the Clifden fire brigade arrived at the scene within 15 minutes and spent three hours bringing the blaze under control.

Mr Breathnach was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed from the house at around noon on Tuesday. A post mortem examination took place at University Hospital Galway yesterday.
