NUIG to hold international conference on WWI

AUGUST MARKS the centenary of the start of The Great War and in anticipation of that, NUI Galway will hold a major international history workshop on the conflict.

The workshop, entitled Small Nations and Colonial Peripheries in World War I: Europe and the Wider World will take place at the university’s James Hardiman Library on June 13 and 14.

Ranging from Ireland to Australia to Central Asia, 12 speakers, including NUIG’s Dr John Cunningham, will consider how the war impacted people, such as the Irish, who found themselves on the periphery of great powers or part of major empires.

The keynote address, Small Nations inside a Big State: American Immigrant Communities react to War, 1914-17, will be delivered on Friday 13 at 4.30pm by the prominent American WWI historian, Prof Michael A Neiberg of the US Army College, Pennsylvania.

The programme features other, potentially facinating lectures, such as Daniel Rouven Steinbach’s Allied Troops on German Soil: The Occupation of German East Africa in the First World War, will show that there was more to The Great War than the battlefields of the western front.

The conference is open to the public and all are welcome, especially those interested in the World War I centenary. For more information see www.nuigalway.ie/history
