Public meeting to save Barnaderg Post Office

The future of Barnaderg Post Office and An Post’s refusal to outline its strategy for sustaining the rural post office network are the topics expected to be thrashed out at a public meeting at Barnaderg Community Centre next week.

The local community in Barnaderg, Killererin, outside Tuam, have come to together to try to prevent the closure of their post office as it is feared that it will have a massive impact on community life. Since An Post’s announcement in January that it is considering the future Barnaderg Post Office, including its possible closure, locals have made more than 200 written submissions against the proposal and gathered some 1,200 signatures in a petition.

A public meeting will now take place at 9pm on Wednesday May 14, and invitations have been sent to Donal Connell, chief executive officer of An Post, and Pat Rabbitte, Minister for Communications, Energy, and Natural Resources. Those who have already confirmed their attendence include Brian McGann, general secretary, and Padraig McNamara of the Postmaster Union. Invitations have also been sent out to all European candidates for the Midlands-North West, all Oireactas members for Galway East, and Local Election candidates for the Tuam electoral area.
