People affected by suicide invited to attend Ballinasloe support group

People affected by suicide are invited to attend a facilitated self help support group meeting tonight (Thursday ) at 8.30pm at Hayden’s Hotel, Ballinasloe.

The event is being organised by Galway East Life Support (GELS ), a voluntary group set up in 2013 in response to the needs of people affected by suicidal thoughts or actions or by the thoughts or actions of others. Its motto is “Saving Lives through Education, Prevention, Awareness and Support”.

GELS members include representatives from the public, the HSE, the Gardai, IFA, GAA, substance abuse groups, the Lions Club, and local and national public representatives.

“Suicide is a chilling and desolating act and is always a tragedy,” says a spokesperson for the group. “It can leave people who survive it with many questions. Those who live with the thoughts of suicide will benefit from expressing themselves and listening to others in similar circumstances in a supportive and caring environment. Only those who live in these circumstances really understand what it is like and how it feels.”

The organisation believes that by allowing people to express their feelings and have them validated in a safe and caring environment they will gain confidence in dealing with life’s difficulties.

Individuals and family members are invited to attend the free meeting. For further information telephone Frank (group facilitator ) at (087 ) 6420870 or Donna at (086 ) 1722827.
