Galway u-21 footballers championship campaign begins

After their marvellous All-Ireland success in 2013, it is back to the drawing board for Alan Flynn's Galway u-21 footballers when they face Leitrim this Saturday (4.30pm ) in Carrick-on-Shannon in the Connacht semi-final.

Flynn, who is joined on the management team this season by Terry O' Regan (St James ) and Noel Meehan (Caltra ) has a good few of last year's players to call on again this season.

The team is captained by James Shaughnessy and the Ballinalsoe player will probably line out in his regular full-back slot on Saturday.

Other players who saw action last year and will probably start on Saturday include Cathal Mulryan, Ian Burke, Seán Moran, Shane Maughan and Moycullen's Eoin Walsh.

Mike Day (Headford ) will probably start at midfield, but both Shane Walsh and Damien Comer, who regularly gave big performances last season, are struggling with ongoing injuries and are unlikely to be involved this weekend.

The other semi-final between a hotly fancied Roscommon side, which defeated Mayo by 4-10 to 1-8 in the first round, and Sligo, is also on this Saturday at Markievicz Park, and the Connacht final is scheduled for Saturday April 5.
