Hannah Arendt and Adolf Eichmann

HANNAH ARENDT, author of the famous book Eichmann in Jerusalem, will be the subject of the next screening of the Galway Film Society.

Hannah Arendt, the German film directed by Margaretha Von Trotta (who made 1986’s Rosa Luxemburg ), and starring Barbara Sukowa in the title role, will be screened in the Town Hall Theatre this Sunday at 8pm.

Arendt is commissioned by the New Yorker to write about the trial of Adolf Eichmann. The result was her celebrated coinage “the banality of evil”. Her epiphany is in realising that Eichmann was not a monster but a pen-pusher. For Arendt, it was in this insidious mediocrity – administrators obediently carrying out the Holocaust – that evil resided.

Blending low-key drama with archival black-and-white footage of Eichmann’s cross-examination, the film looks at questions of complicity and guilt.

Tickets are available from the Town Hall on 091 - 569777 or www.tht.ie
