Galway slave traders in the Caribbean and Viking life will be among the subjects explored in the Galway City Museum this year.

The museum has launched a new programme for the first half of 2014 catering for all ages. It includes lectures, illustrated talks, art classes, performances, screenings, and workshops.

Among the highlights will be talks on the history of hurling by Dr Paul Rouse of UCD (March 1 ) and Galway slave traders in the Caribbean by TCD’s Dr Orla Power (March 6 ); and sean-nós dance workshops with Emma O’Sullivan (May 3 and 31 ).

For children, there will be archaeology workshops with Anne Carey looking at the lives of prehistoric farmers, early Christian monks, the Vikings, and the Anglo-Normans.

The museum’s Thursday evening lecture series runs for 10 weeks, starting on Thursday January 30 with archaeologist Michael Gibbons discussing the maritime history and archaeology of Galway’s coastline.

Events guides are available to pick up at the museum. The majority of events are free but must be booked in advance. For more information or booking contact 091 - 532465 or email [email protected]
