Galway’s Indian community to celebrate Diwali festival

Galway’s Indian community will celebrate Diwali - the festival of lights - with a special event in the Radisson Hotel on Saturday November 9 at 5pm, to which all Galwegians are invited.

The word Diwali means a ‘row of lights’ and is a time to dispel the darkness of ignorance and instead light the way on our journey through life. It is celebrated on the 14/15 day in the dark half of Kartik (October - November ). It is a time in which prayers are offered to Maha Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

Diwali is also a festival that celebrates the triumph of good over evil, righteousness over treachery, and truth over falsehood. For Hindus the world over it celebrates Lord Rama’s long-awaited return to his Kingdom of Ayodhya after his 14-year exile in the forests.

It commemorates Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakaasura who had kidnapped and terrorised the gopis of Vrindavan.

The festival is also a time of family get-togethers and celebrations and as such, the Galway Indian community is inviting the public to join them at Radisson Hotel on November 9 to celebrate Diwali.

There will be cultural dances, Indian food, music from Soul Beatz, and prizes to be won. Tickets are €25 for adults and €15 for seven to 12-year-olds. For tickets contact Sreeni on 083 - 3095618 or email [email protected].
