Galway must get ‘fair share’ of social housing allocation says Nolan

Galway must get its “fair share” of the €30 million allocated for social housing in Budget 2014 Galway West Labour Party TD Derek Nolan has demanded.

Half of the extra €30 million that was allocated will be for the construction of new homes, while the remaining €15 million will be invested into renovating long-term vacant units back into social use.

However Dep Nolan said that a section of the money should be made available to local authorities “for shovel ready housing projects”. The TD wants to see the development of a targeted social housing building programme for the city, to replace the current short term approach which is “very much reliant on the rental markets”.

He added that such a programme is also vital to deal with the number of people on Galway’s housing list and would provide some construction jobs to those out of work since the building collapse.

Dep Nolan will be meeting with Housing Minister Jan O’Sullivan to “ensure Galway gets its fair share of funding and that a plan is put in place to address the housing needs in the region”.
