Londis Newcastle Road supporting the local community

Londis Newcastle Road, located across the road from University College Hospital Galway, is a store that is dedicated to the local community, local causes, and local services.

Opened four years ago by brothers Jonathan and Derek Corbett, the premises comprises a deli counter, Subway, and a shop stocked with everything a person could need; all open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Due to its close proximity to the hospital, an arrangement was made to keep the shop and deli counters open 24 hours a day for late night staff and patients of the hospital. This constant service around the clock necessitated the removal of the front door of the store, making the Newcastle Road Londis the only shop in Ireland to quite literally have no door or shutter.

In the last year, the store has teamed up with other businesses along the road to form the ‘Scholars Walk’, which has adopted the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland (CFAI ) as its chosen charity partner. Most recently, the businesses banded together to raise more than €11,000 for the new cystic fibrosis facility that is under construction at UCHG. The money was raised through several different fundraising activities including five-a-side football tournaments and coffee mornings.

Londis Newcastle Road is determined to give back to the local community that has supported it over the last four years. Along with its efforts in aid of cystic fibrosis, the business has also supported several other local Galway charities including Croí and Console. It also supports local sports clubs around Galway city including Rahoon Hurling Club, Corrib Rangers, Knocknacarra FC, and the Galway cricket team which recently won the Munster Cup. The business provides all food for the Galway FA women’s team.

Due to its location, Londis Newcastle Road has a strong student base which has kept its business thriving over the past four years. The store has a student loyalty system in place to which NUI Galway students can sign up. The loyalty scheme means that students can avail of excellent discounts on quality food and beverages. The store is proud to announce that it is the official location of Ireland’s cheapest chicken fillet roll, at a price of €1.99, as well as being one of the cheapest places in Galway for a cup of coffee or tea at just €1.

Jonathan and Derek Corbett have done a great job maintaining the store while supporting local clubs, services, and causes. After the success of the Newcastle Road branch, the brothers decided to open a second store on High Street in Galway city centre, with further developments and expansion expected early next year with plans to open a third location.
