Claregalway favourites, but Menlough will be no pushovers

This Sunday at Pearse Stadium (4pm ), Claregalway and Menlough will battle it out for the county intermediate football title.

The winners will also return to the senior ranks for next season's championship, so there is much at stake for both clubs.

Claregalway will start as favourites, but Menlough will be hard to stop.

Claregalway will look to county senior Danny Cummins in their full-forward line to hit their match-winning scores and it is vital Menlough keep him on a tight rein.

Big midfielder Eoghan Commins has been in splendid form for Claregalway and his battle with Robert Hughes and the impressive David Reilly will go a long way to deciding who will be victorious.

Elsewhere Claregalway, under the joint management of Alan Moran and Kenny Murphy, and coached by the experienced Tommy Lally, will be looking to county u-21 star Seán Moran at centre-forward to lead the way.

Defenders Stephen Cunniffe and impressive corner back Mark Goldrick are also players to watch. Former county keeper Brian Donoghue is in goal for them.

I remember from my playing days just how difficult Menlough are to beat and they have been knocking around intermediate for too long now.

The word is that they are really up for this game and in players such as Con Lucey in the full-back line, the imposing half back line of Mark Costello, Joey Glynn and Tomás Mannion they have some genuine leaders. Up front they will look to Brendan Costello to provide the match-winning scores. However, the shoulder injury to Niall Carty is a loss.

It should be a ding-dong battle and one I am looking forward to seeing.

That game is preceded at 2pm by Dunmore MacHales v St Michael’s in the county minor B championship final sponsored by O’Briens of Galway Free Range Eggs.
