Jeremy Irons to address NUIG Lit and Deb society

Tonight at 7pm, the Literary and Debating Society will launch a year of events with a visit from actor Jeremy Irons, who will discuss the responsibility of the privileged to be involved in public discourse and to help shape society.

In a career that has spanned film, television, and theatre, Jeremy Irons has appeared in such critically acclaimed productions as The Lion King, The Man in the Iron Mask, and more recently a leading role in the US show The Borgias. Irons is also known for his charity work and his outspoken political views.

Mr Irons will be joined at the event by British actor and television writer Robert Heyland known for his work on the series Ultimate Force.

Founded before NUI Galway even opened its doors, the university’s Literary and Debating Society is entering its 167th year. This society holds public meetings every Thursday in the university, debating topics from the Seanad referendum to the structures of the GAA and has helped to shape debate in Ireland since its foundation. The President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, and many current and past politicians are former members of the society.

The launch evening will take place from 7pm to 10pm tonight in the Kirwan Theatre on the Concourse on the NUIG campus.
