Heart charity sets birthday challenge

Local heart charity Croi is urging people to celebrate their big birthdays next year by embarking on a charity challenge.

“If you are celebrating a big birthday maybe it’s the big 30, 40 or 50 what better way to mark this milestone than to take a charity challenge that could make a real difference,” urges Seona Joyce of Croi.

“Not only will you be helping heart patients and their families in your community but you will also improve your own level of fitness, lose any excess weight and help reduce your own risk of heart disease.”

She says marathons are often viewed as primarily for elite athletes. “However, lots of the most unlikely suspects have taken up the challenge over the years and all have succeeded and enjoyed the experience. Croi marathoners vary greatly in age and speed with some aiming to complete a marathon in three hours while others simply aim ‘to finish on the same day!’”

Croi’s marathon schedule for 2009 includes the London Marathon, Boston Marathon, New York City Marathon and Inishbofin Half-Marathon.

“Walkers, runners and joggers are equally welcome on the Croi team. Research shows it is possible to prepare for a marathon from a zero base of fitness in only 16 weeks so there really is no excuse not to take up the challenge. So now is your chance to mark a milestone and make 2009 a memorable and life-changing year.”
