Marketing MSc moved to blended learning delivery

With the on surge of both the globalised consumer landscape and recessionary times, effective marketing has never been more important and now it is even easier to up-skill in the field.

From this September the very successful MSc in Marketing at IT Sligo will be offered in blended learning format, which means that most of it will be delivered online with attendance only required at four sessions per semester.

Head of Department of Marketing, Tourism and Sport Ann Higgins said that the world of marketing is evolving at a fast pace and that up-skilling to Masters level is an opportunity for people working or interested in the science of marketing to learn about the latest trends; “As the consumer grows more and more discerning, marketers need to stay ahead of the latest technologies and trends,” she said. “Online technologies have really taken off in the last five years, and while traditional marketing principals and methods are still important, practitioners need to keep abreast of developments in order to stay ahead.”

Gail Molloy from Mayo graduated from the MSc in Marketing in 2011. While she had worked in the area of sales and marketing for 15 years, her primary degree was in science and she wanted to complement her marketing experience with a qualification. Now working as Sales Director with Teleflex Medical in Athlone, she said her only regret is that she didn’t do the MSc in Marketing earlier in her career; “I already had a lot of on-the-job experience but I had never formally studied marketing and the MSc broadened my thinking and gave me a much better understanding of the influence and value of certain elements of the marketing mix on overall company performance.

“I absolutely loved the course. I undertook it over two academic years and did it on a modular basis. The course is very relevant and the lecturers are in-tune with industry needs. My only regret was that I didn’t do it earlier in my career,” she said.

Applications are now invited for the MSc in Marketing commencing this September 2013. It is a one-year full-time course but participants may select individual modules to complete over a longer period if family or work commitments require.
