Lally prepares for World Championships in Ukraine

Galway athlete Alanna Lally has been selected to compete for Ireland in the World Youth Track & Field Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine.

The Presentation Athenry student, who is a member of the Galway City Harriers, has been selected to run in the 400m at the championships which take place July 10-14.

Coached by PJ Coyle of GCH, Lally has already competed for Ireland on numerous occasions in cross-country, indoor track and outdoor track competitions. This season Lally bagged two golds at the Woodies DIY All-Ireland Juvenile Indoor Championships in the 800m and 400m, setting new championship records.

Other Galway athletes in the news are Craughwell AC’s Nicholas Sheehan (800m silver medallist ) and Damien O'Boyle who (steeplechase gold medallist ) produced two magnificent pertormances at the 2013 Tailteann Games in Tullamore last weekend.

Sheehan, silver medallist in the 800m, and O’Boyle who took the gold in the steeplechase, have been selected to compete for the Irish schools track & field team that will compete in the Schools International later this month.

Craughwell’s John Cormican won a bronze medal in the 1500m in a time of 4.14.22 at the games, while Lally won in a time of 2.13 in the 800m, Laura Ann Costello took silver in the 200m, and Samuel Samson won bronze in the 400m hurdles.

National u- 23 and Junior Championships

At the AAI National u- 23s and Junior Championships, Galway athletes produced a host of great performances, with pride of place going to Athenry AC athlete Sinead Tuohy, who took gold in the u-23 high jump with a leap of 1.50m.

Lally was again on the podium, claiming silver in the junior women’s 400m, while Evan McGuire GCH took silver in the junior men’s 400m hurdles in 55.54. Michelle Maher, also of GCH, ran 2.20 for a junior women’s 800m bronze, and Loughrea's Melissa Barrett took u-23 javelin silver, throwing 22.94.
