Galway African Film Festival

THE RICH diversity of African films, animations, shorts, and documentaries, offering both entertainment and a fresh perspective on life in the continent, will be on show in Galway.

The sixth Galway African Film Festival takes place from Friday May 24 to Sunday 26 in NUI Galway’s Huston School of Film & Digital Media, Earl’s Island (across from the Cathedral ).

The films concentrate ways of finding and creating identity in familial, social, and political situations. Some focus on individual adventures, others on social struggles.

Senegalese film The Lion’s Point of View makes its Irish premier at the festival (Sunday 26 at 6pm ). Inspired by the proverb, “As long as lions do not have their own historians, tales of hunting will always glorify the hunter”, it explores the consequences of colonisation and non-African portrayals of the continent.

The programme for Friday 24 is: Zambian short Mwansa The Great (5.15pm ); Ugandan documentary Call Me Kuchu (6pm ); and South African feature film Material (8pm ).

On Saturday 24 see British documentary Nollywood Doing it Right (3pm ) and three Nigerian feature films, Last Flight To Abuja (4.30pm ), Phone Swap (6pm ), and Alaskaland (9pm ).

Sunday 24 screenings are South African feature animation Zambezia (4pm ); The Lion’s Point Of View (6pm ); Senegalese feature La Pirogue (8pm ); and Burkina Faso short Hasaki Ya Suda (10pm ).

There will be an opening ceremony at 5pm on Friday 24. The festival is organised by the Galway One World Centre with the Galway Film Society and the Huston School.
