Public lecture on 1913 Galway lockout

Most people know something of the Dublin lock-out of 1913, in which James Larkin’s ITGWU faced an Employers’ Federation led by William Martin Murphy.

Less well-known is the Galway conflict of the same year, which pitted Máirtín Mór McDonogh, of Thomas McDonogh & Sons, against the Galway General Workers & Labourers’ Union, led by William O’Halloran.

This evening at 8pm, four leading historians will discuss the Galway and Dublin lockouts at a public lecture in the Galway Mechanics Institute, Middle Street. The featured historians are Mary Muldowney (Trinity ); James Curry and John Cunningham (NUI Galway ) and Francis Devine (SIPTU College ).

All are welcome. Admission is €5/3.
