Teens invited to test their sporting stamina and raise funds for Galway charities

Youth Work Ireland, Galway and the Galway Rape Crisis Centre have teamed up to hold a sporting event for teenagers aged 13 to 15 in the Kingfisher Club, NUI Galway, later this month. The event aims to raise funds for both organisations, while also raising awareness of their work in Galway city and county.

The event, called SPACE, will be a pentathlon, with five events under the categories of speed (swimming ), power (obstacle course ), agility (wall climbing ), concentration (archery ), and endurance (gym bikes ). Participants can raise sponsorship funding for the two charities while testing their sporting skills in these events.

Youth Work Ireland, Galway aims to empower young people, boost their self-confidence, enhance their skills, and give them the opportunity to engage in their community in a positive way. The organisation works with some 5,000 young people every year in Galway city and county. It runs projects based in Westside, Rahoon, Loughrea, Ballinasloe, east Galway, and Tuam and supports 18 youth clubs, which are run by volunteers.

The Galway Rape Crisis Centre is dedicated to providing a professional, caring, and confidential counselling and support service for people affected by sexual abuse and sexual violence. It also works towards ending cultural and societal tolerance of sexual violence through advocacy, awareness raising, and education programmes. Its services include long term and short term counselling, a 24-hour helpline, an emergency call-out service, and a dedicated asylum seeker clinic. The centre also has a legal clinic and can provide accompaniment to services.

SPACE will take place on Saturday January 26 from 9am to 6pm. For more information, registration, and to download a sponsorship card visit www.spacegalway.com
