Seven Psychopaths to help build Solas Picture Palace

Galwegians will be among the very first to see Seven Psychopaths, the new film from the Oscar winning writer/director Martin McDonagh, when it receives a gala screening in the Town Hall Theatre.

Seven Psychopaths, starring Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken, Harry Dean Stanton, and Woody Harrelson, will be screened in the Town Hall on Monday December 3 at 7.30pm. The screening will be in aid of the Solas Picture Palace, the arthouse cinema for Galway, which is currently being built at Lower Merchant’s Road.

Written and directed by McDonagh, who also wrote and directed the successful comedy/crime film In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths is about a struggling screenwriter who accidentally becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his eccentric friends kidnap a gangster’s pet dog. The gala screening will proceed the film’s general release.

The announcement of the gala screening is further good news for the picture palace, work on which is continuing.

“Things are going well,” says Tracy Geraghty of Solas Galway Picture Palace Teoranta. “The basement is fully excavated, we have started doing the linings, we are on the fourth or fifth concrete port for the walls.

“Weather permitting, we should be at the ground level and after that, construction should be at a rate of one floor a month. We continue to fundraise and we are getting support from the Galway business community, the film sector, and the Galway City Council.”

The picture palace will have three cinema screens (with one having the ability to be used for conferences or performances ), a café, box office, bookshop, and offices. “It will be a civil building in the city, for the use and enjoyment of everyone in the city,” said Ms Geraghty.

Solas Galway Picture Palace Teoranta also feels that the presence of the cinema will be important in helping in Galway’s bid to be a UNESCO City of Film.

Fundraising is continuing through the cinema’s ‘Endow a seat for €1,000’ campaign. The public can also help raise funds for the cinema through a scheme whereby tickets can be purchased through a direct debit scheme an this will allow contributors to enter into a draw for a ‘plus one’ pass that will allow free access to the cinema for a year.
