Garry Hynes wins major theatre award

Druid Theatre’s Garry Hynes has won the Best Director Award at the Theatre Awards UK for her work on Druid’s recent major production DruidMurphy - Plays by Tom Murphy.

The awards were presented at London’s Guildhall by the Theatrical Management Association on Sunday and hosted by television presenter Anneka Rice. Ms Hynes was presented with her award by actors Don Warrington, best known for his role as Philip in Rising Damp, and Gwen Taylor.

“I can’t think of a better way to end what has been a simply wonderful time working on these three great plays by Tom Murphy with such an extraordinary ensemble,” Ms Hynes said afterwards. “I would like to dedicate this award to Tom Murphy and to all those, on and off stage, who’ve helped to make DruidMurphy happen. I’d also like to thank Druid’s UK partners, Edward Hall at the Hampstead Theatre and Michelle Dickson at the Oxford Playhouse for inviting Druid to perform in the UK this year.”

DruidMurphy opened at the Hampstead Theatre in London in June and also played the Oxford Playhouse in August. The 21-week tour concluded on October 20 at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC following 100 performances in Ireland, England, and the USA.
