Clarinbridge goes pink for cancer research

Clarinbridge village is gearing up to support breast cancer awareness by covering local residences and work premises in pink. This weekend, the local landmarks will be pretty in pink as the village residents work to get the outdoor lighting on businesses and the church sporting the colour pink.

A special mass will be celebrated in the Clarinbridge Church on Friday to spark the festivities and this will be followed by the release of pink balloons.

The festivities start on Friday with a special mass at 7.30pm in the Clarinbridge Church which will be followed by the release of 1,000 pink balloons. Professor Michael Kerin. medical director at National Breast Cancer Research Institute, (NBCRI ), will then deliver a lecture on breast cancer facts and the research strategies of NBCRI based in NUIG. This talk will take place at 9pm in the famous Paddy Burke’s pub.

That will conclude the Friday portion of the festivities and attention will turn to the local hurling pitch on Saturday at 12 noon. A ‘Battle of the Sexes’ fun match will take place, with a barbeque, live music, and children’s entertainment including pink duck races, face painting, and dodgeball, taking place until 3pm.

Sherry’s Pub will be the focal point for the evening’s entertainment when the cocktail party commences at 8pm. Action will resume on the hurling pitch at 12 noon on Sunday as the mini 7s camoigie tournament takes place. Live music and entertainment will feature again. The three day festival is a communal project and while everyone is sure to enjoy it, there is a poignancy behind the organising of the event. Breast cancer is a prevalent cause of death for women and the Clarinbridge Pink festival will remind people of the great work done by NBCRI in trying to combat this illness.
