Gort garda remains in hospital following Limerick assault

A Gort-based garda who was seriously injured in an incident in Limerick city at the weekend remains in hospital where his condition is described as stable.

The off-duty garda was returning from a night out socialising with his wife in Limerick in the early hours of Saturday when a gang of youths attempted to steal his wife’s handbag. The garda, who is in his twenties, was struck when he attempted to prevent the robbery. It is not believed his assailants were aware of his profession.

He was brought to Limerick Regional Hospital, where he remains this week receiving treatment for a fractured skull.

It is understood gardaí in Limerick are following a definite line of inquiry in relation to the incident.
