Returning to education as an adult learner

Avril Ivory (MSc ), dean of CNM

We train nutritional therapists in Galway, our students come from all over the west of Ireland, some are recent school leavers but many are adult learners. Our students are united by a keen interest in the relationship between diet and wellbeing, a willingness to learn, and a desire to work as a nutritional therapist. There are a number of advantages to being an adult learner.

• Adult learners tend to have developed the ability to self direct their own learning.

• They have a rich reservoir of life experience that can serve as a resource for learning.

• They have an internal motivation to learn and do well, instead of being told to or feeling obliged to.

• Research suggests that setting new goals as adults can lead to high levels of satisfaction and achieving these goals can increase reported levels of wellbeing. Obtaining a new educational qualification as an adult can be a very rewarding goal.

CNM is typical of many progressive colleges where an interactive learning environment that suits the adult learner is in place, good support is offered outside of the classroom, tutorials, student website, etc, adult learners tend to make good use of these resources. Student websites allow students to access additional learning guides and aids in a time and place that suits them.

A CNM open evening will take place on Tuesday August 21 at Galway Business School from 7pm. To book phone 01 2353094 or visit www.naturopathy.ie
