Galwegians encouraged to attend Michael Collins commemoration

Galwegians will travel to Béal na mBláth in County Cork this weekend to attend the commemoration ceremony marking the 90th anniversary of the tragic death of Michael Collins.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny will speak at the annual event, while the armoured car that was part of Collins’ convoy will also return to the scene for the first time since he was killed there in 1922.

Galway city Fine Gael councillor Frank Fahy is organising a bus for Galway people interested in travelling to Cork to attend the ceremony this Sunday.

“The annual gathering is always a historical occasion but is of additional significance this year, as it is the first time that a serving Taoiseach will give the oration at the event,” said Cllr Fahy. “This is a good opportunity, not just for party members, but for anyone with an interest in history to be part of the event to commemorate one of our greatest and most enduring historical figures.”

The bus will depart the Dyke Road car park at 8am on Sunday and people can be collected at a number of other stops along the route by prior arrangement. Parking at the Dyke Road is free on Sunday. Tickets cost €45 and include breakfast in Limerick on the way there, and dinner on the way back.

Booking is essential. To reserve a place contact Cllr Fahy on 087 - 2345852 by Saturday afternoon.
