NUIG DramSoc to celebrate centenary

NUI GALWAY’S DramSoc, one of Galway’s greatest student institutions, will this year celebrate the centenary of its founding, with a variety of events.

Although student theatre productions had long been part of Queen’s College Galway (as the university was known in its earliest decades ) - the first recorded play was Femmes Servantes, staged in 1905, it was only in 1912 that students came together to perform theatre under the banner of a dramatic society.

Over the past 100 years, DramSoc has contributed to theatre not only in the university but across Galway, and its members have gone on to form many successful theatre companies - the best known example of which is Druid, founded by UCG alumni Garry Hynes, Marie Mullen, and Mick Lally.

The current DramSoc committee is putting together a book to record and celebrate the society’s centenary and it also hold a centenary ball later in the year.

The society is calling on all former members who wish to be involved with this year’s celebrations to email [email protected] or write to DramSoc c/o The Socs Box, NUIG, University Road, Galway.

Any photos anyone may have of past DramSoc shows or events which can be donated to the book would be greatly appreciated by the society. Those who wish to attend the ball should also contact the above address.
