Galway Art Club - celebrating a diamond jubilee

THE GALWAY Art Club, one of the longest running such clubs in Ireland, is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee - or 75 years in existence - this year.

This year’s annual exhibition will be held in St Patrick’s School and will be officially opened by film producer, lecturer, and director Lelia Doolan on Wednesday July 11 and feature work by the club’s 50 members.

The club was founded in 1937 and according to the writer Walter Macken, when he opened an exhibition of their work in 1964, “this is the only speck of culture in the city”.

The club’s 75th birthday was marked by a visit to Áras on Uachtarain to meet President Michael D Higgins. Mrs Higgins was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Helen Spellman, the club’s longest serving active member at more than 60 years.

The exhibition is open to the public from Thursday July 12. It runs daily, including weekends, from 10am to 6pm until Saturday 28.
