Fisheries Tower ‘eyesore’ bridge removed

The bridge to the iconic Fisheries Tower on Wolfe Tone Bridge, which had been in a state of disrepair for some time, was removed this week.

The removal was carried out by Inland Fisheries Ireland. The Galway City Council had issued a derelict site order on the bridge which required that it be dismantled.

It is understood that the order was issued so that the bridge would be removed in advance of the Volvo Ocean Race. There were concerns that with the crowds expected in the area this weekend and into next week, there would be attempts by some people to access the bridge on dares or for ‘devilment’.

It is also understood that discussions are ongoing as to how and when a new bridge to the tower will be installed.
