Charities join forces for Camino adventure

In these challenging economic times, two Irish health charities, Croí, the local heart and stroke charity and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland and have come together to jointly promote a fundraising trek along the famed pilgrim path of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela.

Both charities are now calling on anyone interested in trekking this path, known as ‘The Way of St James’, to consider doing so in aid of one of two worthy causes. The charity trek will take place from September 8 to 15 2012, taking the last 115km along what is known as the French Route. The trek will start in Sarria in Northern Spain and finish in the historic city of Santiago de Compostela.

Each year, tens of thousands of walkers embark on the Camino trail, starting in various locations throughout Europe. The Croí/Alzheimer Society of Ireland trek will comprise an eight day tour walking an average of 18km per day. Accommodation en route will be in comfortable locally run hotels and the trek will be led by experienced guides. Walkers will travel at their own pace, allowing them the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery and quaint villages along the route.

This combined charity trek is being offered as a fully inclusive trip with return flights from Dublin, trek gear and all food and accommodation provided.

Speaking at the launch of this joint charity challenge, Croí CEO Neil Johnson said: “It makes great sense for us to combine forces with another charity embarking on an event such as this. Our collaboration will result in reduced costs for both our causes, thereby allowing each charity to benefit more in financial terms. Equally, the trekkers will have a chance to learn more about the work of each other’s charity, thus helping to raise awareness of heart disease, stroke and Alzheimers”.
