Public meeting to call for reversal of rent supplement cuts

Many people in rented accommodation in Galway face eviction as landlords refuse to reduce the rent to the new lower thresholds introduced by the Government in the Budget.

This is the view of Sinn Féin senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, who will be speaking at a public meeting on the issue tomorrow evening at 8pm in the Clybaun Hotel, Knocknacarra.

The meeting, organised by Galway Sinn Féin, will address the reduction in rent supplement available to tenants who rent property in the private sector. It will also examine the difficulties experienced by individuals and families unable to find alternative accommodation within the new rent constraints.

Sen Ó Clochartaigh said he has been “inundated with calls and letters” from families and individuals in receipt of rent allowances.

“The new lower rent threshold does not correlate with the average price of property in Galway. It is near impossible to find suitable accommodation that reflects these new rent caps,” he said. “I hope those affected by this come to the meeting on Friday and following discussion collectively put forward a plan of action to see this cut reversed.”
