Cycle the greenway with all the family for Ability West

A fun family cycle day to fundraise for Ability West will take place on June 9.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Galway, the charity cycle will take place on the Great Western Greenway Cycle Track - the 19km cycle starting in Newport and finishing in Mulranny, Co Mayo.

The cycle is aimed at families with plenty of stops and fun activities along the way. There will also be a barbecue available to everyone at the end of the cycle. On reaching Mulranny transport, if required, will be provided to return to Newport. Families are encouraged to register and start the cycle between 11am and 1pm.

Cathal Ryan of Ability West says the event is a fantastic idea and a great way to spend a fun family day out and take in the spectacular scenery along the Great Western Greenway.

“Ability West is delighted the Rotary club of Galway is organising this event and we are very appreciative of all the efforts that are being made by all the Rotarians involved.”

Proceeds from this event will go to Ability West for the purchase of specially adapted tricycles for people with disabilities. These tricycles will then be made available to all members of the public with disabilities at the planned Trike Park which will be situated in Toghermore House in Tuam. This will be the first of its kind in Ireland.

"As a result of our Trike Park, everyone of all ages and abilities can enjoy the benefits of cycling. This is something generally not available to people with disabilities, but the adapted tricycles are adjusted for their special requirements. This is a project which Ability West and the Rotary Club of Galway can enable people with disabilities and their families as a whole to share an ordinary recreational experience and help build a better quality of life."

Sponsorship cards are available from Kieran McHugh of the Rotary Club of Galway 087-0698666 and Cathal Ryan of Ability West 087-6820265, or www.abilitywest.ie or www.galwayrotary.org
