Red Bird to give a SAMPLE of youth creativity

RED BIRD, an up and coming youth-led arts organisation, will hold SAMPLE, an exhibition of its works, which opens in the Galway Arts Centre tomorrow at 6pm.

Red Bird members are aged between 15 and 22 and their interests range from fashion to creative writing, from journalism to acting, and from film to visual art. The group has been working with Galway artist Louise Manifold since September 2011, who has assisted and guided the group in its creative work.

The exhibition will feature artwork by Theresa Gessert which questions Irish attitudes towards alcohol; Daniel Birmingham’s fashion inspired headpieces which focus on the contrast between natural and manufactured materials; and a video piece entitled Dispose of your worries/Cuir amach do chuid imní by Siofra Ní Chonluain.

The exhibition, which is also the official launch of the Red Bird group, will be opened by the Mayor of Galway Hildegarde Naughton. Music will be provided by vocalist and songwriter Anna McCarthy, of the indie-pop band Dott.

Information on becoming a Red Bird member will also be available on the night. LORG Printmakers, Papers Cuts Design Studio, and Flying Knee Productions will sponsor SAMPLE.

Red Bird is part of a network of Youth Ensembles currently supported by the Arts Council. The Red Square Critics, a group of young critics also supported by the Arts Council and the Butler Gallery, Kilkenny, will review the exhibition.

The exhibition runs until Friday May 11. School tours are available throughout the week. Contact [email protected] to book.
