Ó Cuív calls for immediate cuts to petrol and diesel costs

An instant reduction of 5c in the price of petrol and diesel would “make a significant impact on household budgets” and it is a reduction the Government must introduce.

This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway West TD Éamon Ó Cuív who believes that Fianna Fáil’s The Motorists Emergency Relief Bill, due to be debated in the Dáil this week, will produce significant savings for motorists, farmers, and small businesses.

“People are being squeezed from every angle at the moment and the rapidly rising cost of fuel is just another cost they simply cannot afford,” he said. “An instant reduction of 5c at the pumps would make a significant impact on household budgets.”

The Fianna Fáil proposal also calls for a review of fuel taxes every three months instead of the current system of annual reviews of taxation every year.

“It does not make any sense to only have a review of fuel taxes once a year when the cost of oil on world markets is changing all the time,” said Dep Ó Cuív. “The Government needs flexibility to respond to this. The Fianna Fáil legislation would allow the Government to act quickly to developing situations in the market place.”

Dep Ó Cuív said the rising cost of fuel is “crippling many families and small businesses across County Galway” and that the Government is “making things worse by a two per cent hike in VAT this year”.

Dep Ó Cuív is calling on Government TDs Brian Walsh, Seán Kyne, Paul Connaughton, Derek Nolan, and Colm Keaveney “to support the Fianna Fáil legislation and bring about some much needed relief for Galway motorists”.
