Coláiste Iognáid wins trophy for top rowing school

Rowers from Colaiste Iognaid were the overall winners at this year’s Irish Schools Championship Regatta Regatta.

Jes crews won three finals and gained a number of place medals in hard-fought racing at the National Rowing Centre in Cork.

The Jes Junior 18 women’s eight of Ailbhe Murphy, Olivia Forde, Aoife Cushen, Ailbhe Ní Ghríofa, Kayleigh Power, Síle Lenihan, Niamh Heskin, Nicole Cooke and cox Niamh Doran took gold - another victory following the Jes women’s eight win at the International Regatta at Ghent, Belgium, last year.

The Jes men’s Junior 16 quad of Luke Rigney, Kai McGlacken, Daragh McCarthy, Donal Coen and cox Luke Sheridan, had a very close race in the final with Christian Brothers College, but managed to keep the lead to win the first gold medal of the day.

The winning Jes men’s Junior 15 coxed quad of Donal Coen, Kai McGlacken, Danny Coughlan, Gavin Farrell and Cian Hamilton (cox ), flew down the course to take first place by a huge margin in both the heat and the final. They have not lost a race since they came together as a crew more than a year ago.

There were other wins on the day for Galway schools with the Bish winning two eights titles.
