Mayor announces charities to benefit from gala ball

Enable Ireland, COPE’s Waterside house, Galway Contact, and the ISPCC are the four charities that will benefit from this year’s Mayoral Charity Gala Ball.

On Monday, the Mayor of Galway Hildegarde Naughton announced the details of her chosen local charities for the ball which takes place at The Hotel Meyrick on Saturday May 12. Mayor Naughton wants all funds raised on the night to stay in Galway to help the four charities.

Enable Ireland provides essential support and therapy services to children and adults with physical and sensory disabilities in Galway. The organisation plans to use any funds raised against its attempts to provide a hydrotherapy pool.

Waterside House (COPE Galway ) is a domestic abuse refuge for women and children which provides information, targeted support, and court accompaniment. In 2011 it supported more than 500 women and children.

Galway Contact is a voluntary organisation which aims to prevent loneliness and isolation among older people and provide security through the pendant alarm scheme.

The ISPCC has the second largest childline unit in the State with 88 volunteers. Its provision of services include access to Ireland’s only out of hours support services for children with Childline and Childline on line, face-to-face therapeutic support services for children and young people, and volunteer mentoring programmes.

Entertainment for this event is currently being finalised and will be announced in the coming days. Tickets are currently on sale at Treasure Chest on Shop Street at €90 and early booking is advised.
