We Cut Corners @ Róisín Dubh

THE BRILLIANT Dublin indie-rock duo We Cut Corners play Strange Brew at the Róisín Dubh tonight at 9pm.

WCC have impressed over the last 12 months with their debut album Today I Realised I Could Go Home Backwards, released late last year, earning the Dubliners a Meteor Choice Music Prize nomination.

WCC’s music is concerned above all else with melody and being melodic. Drummer/vocalist Conall and guitarist John cite Burt Bacharach as an inspiration, and elements of 1960s-style song structure are as noticeable in their music as is the indie DIY aesthetic.

Album highlights such as ‘A Pirate’s Life’ and ‘Dumb Blonde’ are mellow and gentle, with Conall conveying male lust and angst in a voice that is conversely almost feminine. It is these kind of juxtapositions which give these songs their edge.

The album’s closer ‘Are You A Man Or A Mannequin’ is a gentle ballad which builds to a subtle but highly effective key change towards the end, elevating the song to something sublime and showing the songwriting promise this duo posseses.

Support is from The Ambience Affair and Come On Live Long. Gugai will be DJing afterwards. Admission is free.
