An Irish Colloquy at St Nicholas’

THE NATIONAL Chamber Choir of Ireland will present its concert An Irish Colloquy in St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on Friday April 20 at 8pm, as part of its 2012 National Tour.

The title of the show references the fact that the choir, conducted by Paul Hillier, will perform works by Irish composers and non-Irish composers who are connected to Ireland through musical pieces with texts on an Irish theme.

The programme for the concert is Tarik O’Regan’s ‘The Spring’ which is based on the medieval Irish narrative The Colloquy of the Ancients or Dialogue of the Elders; Arvo Pärt’s ‘The Deer’s Cry’ is the Estonian composer’s setting of ‘St Patrick’s Breastplate’; Nicholas Maw’s ‘Five Irish Songs’ based around writings by Douglas Hyde, Cecil Day Lewis, and Samuel Ferguson; Enda Bates’s ‘Pauper’s Lament/A Stealing Sadness’; and Frank Corcoran’s ‘Caoineadh’ based on traditional Irish songs; and David Fennessy’s ‘ChOirland’, which is a light hearted look at Irish folk songs.

There will also be the world premiere of excerpts of Piers Hellawell’s ‘Isabella’s Banquet’ which is inspired by the famous 1888 book Mrs Beeton’s Book of Household Management.

Tickets are €20/16/6 from Music for Galway (091 - 705962, [email protected] ), Opus II, or www.tht.ie
