Man charged with thefts at NUIG

A Tuam man charged with a plethora of charges, including a number of tresspassing and theft at the National University of Ireland, Galway, was remanded on continuing bail with the strict condition to stay away from the third level institute and its environs.

At Galway District Court recently Charles Cunniffe (28 ) with a temporary address given as Woodquay Hostel, Galway, but with former address at Tullinadaly Road and Cloomore, Tuam, appeared before Judge Mary Fahy charged with stealing a Smurfit Business School Law chain, valued at €5,000, at NUIG on a date unknown between February 1 and 8, 2012; stealing a handbag containing €100 and set of car keys from St Columbanus Church, Distillery Road, and taking possession of a car without lawful authority at Distillery Road, on February 18, 2012; entering an office at NUIG as a tresspasser and stealing a white Mac book valued at €500, on February 24, 2012; entering room 340 at the Arts and Millennium Building, NUIG, as a tresspasser and stealing a handbag containing €500 cash, on February 27, 2012; and stealing a handbag, containing €30 cash, at NUIG on March 1, 2012.

The court heard that the defendant made no reply after charge and caution. Inspector Ernie Whyte then requested that a number of conditions be attached to his bail including staying away from the university, that he sign on at Galway Garda Station twice a week between 9am and 9pm, and be of good behaviour.

Judge Fahy then remanded Cunniffe on continuing bail to appear again at Galway District Court on May 28 next for DPP directions.
