New Irish film @ The Eye

THE OTHER Side Of Sleep, a new Irish film, will be screened at The Eye Cinema from tomorrow, while the film’s director Rebecca Daly will be attending a screening next week.

The Other Side of Sleep is a dark psychological drama and the first feature film by Athlone born Rebecca Daly who won the Best Short award at the Galway Film Fleadh with Joyriders.

The film was nominated for Best Director and Best Actress at the 2012 Irish Film and Television Awards and recently became the first film by a female Irish director to be selected for the Cannes film festival.

Ms Daly will be at The Eye to attend a screening of the film on Tuesday and she will participate in a Q&A session with the audience afterwards.

The film centres on Arlene, a withdrawn factory worker prone to bouts of sleepwalking. One night she awakens in a forest, lying beside the corpse of a young woman. She becomes obsessed with the girl’s murder – her mother met a similar fate decades earlier – and finds herself drawn to the victim’s family as her grasp on reality begins to unravel.

“I wanted to make a film that got under the skin of a thriller, that looked at grief and loss as confusing, haunting, terrifying,” said Rebecca Daly. “I wanted to get at that feeling of walking down a deserted road at night and suddenly becoming aware of your exposure, your vulnerability.”

The cast includes Antonia Campbell-Hughes, Olwen Fouere, Vicky Joyce, Sam Keeley and Cathy Belton, who is originally from Galway.
