BBC Radio 4 to premiere new Julian Gough play

The Great Squanderland Roof, the new play by writer, poet, and singer Jullian Gough will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4’s Afternoon Drama show at 2.15pm on Tuesday February 28.

Julian describes the play as “an extremely over-the-top comedy about the eurozone crisis, set in a comic version of Tipperary” and as “a light-hearted break from the relentless gloom”.

The BBC has also chosen it as the station’s Drama of the Week, so it will be available free to download as a podcast. Galway audiences can also have a listen via the BBC iPlayer for a week after broadcast.

The Great Squanderland Roof centres around Jude who lives in a henhouse with no roof, in the

bankrupt Republic

of Squanderland. Purchased for €10 million at the height of the credit bubble, his henhouse has been rated the asset in Europe most likely to default.

To solve this small but symbolic problem and restore confidence in the markets, Europe’s leaders need a plan, but putting a roof on Jude’s henhouse quickly escalates out of control. Soon they are committed to building a roof over the entire country, half a mile above the startled voters. But what happens when a structure that’s too big to fail finally fails?

To the horror of Europe’s bankers and politicians, Jude comes up with a dramatic (and rather romantic ) solution to the Eurozone crisis...

The play’s cast includes Rory Keenan (The Guard ) as Jude, along with Dermot Crowley (Fr Ted, Return of the Jedi ); Stephanie Flanders, the

BBC economics correspondent; James Lailey; Adjoa Andoh; and Clare Corbett.
