The Gaelic chief and his Oxford friend

Ruaidhri Ó Flaithbheartaigh was a Gaelic Irish chief from Galway and a man of letters who corresponded with a wide circle of friends on a variety of issues.

Ó Flaithbheartaigh, his letters, his friends, his life, and times will all be explored in a public lecture to be given by one of the leading experts on mediaeval Irish history - Richard Sharpe, professor of history at Oxford University.

Prof Sharpe will give the talk, entitled Ruaidhri Ó Flaithbheartaigh through his letters - A Learned Gaelic Chief & his Friend from Oxford in 1700, in the Fottrell Theatre, the Arts Millennium Building, NUI Galway, on Monday February 27 at 7pm.

Prof Sharpe has published books on the early Irish church, St Patrick, St Brigit, and most recently Books from Ireland, 5th to 9th centuries, a survey of all our earliest Irish manuscript books.
