Table Quiz in Menlo Park Hotel to help victims of Philippines typhoon

Victims of a massive typhoon which killed 1,200 and left tens of thousands homeless in the Philippines just before Christmas will benefit from a table quiz to be held on Thursday next February 9 in the Menlo Park Hotel.

The quiz is being organised by Filipino native Milanie Monte who is the accommodation manager at the hotel. Ms Monte hails from Illigan City which was particularly affected by the disaster.

The evening will feature lots of spot prizes, raffles, auctions and a table of four can enter for €40.

Her mother, her brothers, her sisters and her neighbours have all been affected.Their homes are destroyed and while their own families have escaped death, many neighbours have lost entire families. The typhoon struck at night when people were caught unaware.

So far over 1,200 people are reported to have lost their lives. The schools are gone, the health centres are gone, all services are in chaos.

Many of the people worked in the neighbouring city of CDO and because the bridge was swept away, their livelihoods have also suffered greatly.

”We are working on various initiatives to raise funds for this very worthy cause, knowing that anything which is raised will go directly to where it is needed,” said Ms Monte.

”We are planning to hold a Travel Auction or Draw and that is where we hope our colleagues in the hotel industry can help.

“In addition if you are based locally, we will be gathering clothing, tinned and dried foods, children’s books and household goods, linens etc.

”If you could send us a voucher for your hotel for a monetary amount, a weekend, a midweek break, we promise that the proceeds will be put to the best possible use. We do understand that, like ourselves, you probably have lots of requests for sponsorship and possibly designated charities. However, if you feel you can support this, we would be very grateful,” said a hotel spokesperson.
