First time fighters wanted for charity boxing event

Ballybane Sports Co Op is calling on big hearted members of the public to put their names forward for a charity boxing event to take place in March

The event is in aid of the co op, which is involved in promoting and making sport and fitness related activities more accessible to people on the east side of the city.

Organisers are seeking able bodied participants both male and female, with no previous boxing experience.

Those interested in taking part will first need to pass a medical and then the charity boxing fundraiser will kick off with each participant undergoing an intensive eight week training programme. Fighters will be fitted out with Olympic style safety gear and bouts follow the same rules as standard amateur boxing matches.

The aspiring boxers will be given the chance to compete against another novice opponent at the charity event’s fight night in March which will take place in one of Galway city’s four star hotels.

“The training will be based on that of a professional boxer,” said Don Naughton of the Ballybane Sports Co Op. “Those taking part will not only achieve a high level of fitness and learn the art of boxing, they will get the chance to challenge themselves by stepping through the ropes to compete in front of family and friends at the fight night.”
