Buyers chase value at O’Donnellan & Joyce auction

Eight properties sell under the hammer

O’Donnellan and Joyce placed nine properties up for auction and successfully sold eight of them at its recent auction in the Victoria Hotel, Eyre Square.

Colm O’Donnellan of O’Donnellan and Joyce Auctioneers said they were thrilled with the enormous crowd of buyers who came out to acquire properties at incredible value. He said people are looking for value for money in good locations and there is no shortage of buyers if the price is right.

The first property to be auctioned was No 6 Grattan Terrace, a two/three bedroom terraced house in the Claddagh, described by the auctioneers as being in very good condition. Bidding commenced at €175,000 and five individuals chased the property intensely for a period of 15 minutes until eventually the hammer was dropped to tumultuous applause at €242,000. The property was purchased as a family home.

The second property to be auctioned was No 42 Oaklands, Salthill, which was described by the auctioneer as a “doer upper” but a blank canvas in one of Galway’s most desirable locations. Four individuals bid intensely for the property as it started off at €175,000 and increased in increments of €2,000. When the bids reached €230,000 a fresh bidder entered the fray at €232,000 and she eventually secured the property at €235,000. The property was purchased as a family home.

Next to be auctioned was land in Renville in Oranmore which comprised circa one acre. The land had no planning permission but it offers unobstructed views overlooking the bay. Bidding opened at €20,000 and three individuals chased the property until the hammer fell at €46,000.

The fourth property to be auctioned was No 9 Ballybrit Crescent, an old style cottage on a large site directly adjacent to Ballybrit Racecourse. Bidding commenced at €100,000 and bidders chased the property intensely until it was sold at €157,000. The property was purchased as a family home.

The fifth property was a bungalow at Knockdoe, Claregalway. The house, which stood on three acres, was bid on by two young buyers and was eventually sold for €157,000. The property was purchased as a family home.

The sixth property to be auctioned was No 51 Dalysfort Road, a four bedroom semidetached house which was described as a “home for life” by the auctioneer, with a spacious interior but in need of modernisation. Bidding commenced at €245,000 and two individuals, who were sitting beside each other, bid intensely until the auctioneer’s hammer fell at €283,000. The property was purchased as a family home.

The seventh property was No 130 Riveroaks, Claregalway which was described as a perfect start-up home or gilt-edged investment. Bidding commenced at €100,000 and, just when it looked at though the auctioneer was going to bring the hammer down at €125,000, a fresher bidder entered and No 130 was sold as a family home for €128,000.
