Shantalla allotment progress welcomed by councillor

Cllr Colette Connolly, vice chair and PRO of the Shantalla Residents’ Association, has welcomed the progress made on the introduction of allotments in Shantalla.

The councillor says that following a very successful meeting with Stephan Walsh of the Parks Department confirmation was given that the tender documents are now in and being examined. The city council held a series of meetings with the Shantalla Residents’ Association and the Shantalla Development Company to progress the decision to allocate funding to Shantalla for allotments following a motion by Cllr Connolly.

“I’m delighted that the project is progressing so well. There will be 31 allotments in total to be located to the rear of the Shantalla Community Centre in Shantalla Neighbourhood Park. Applications are expected to be publicly advertised prior to Christmas and the appointed developer to have commenced works on site. However, criteria for processing applications, such as proximity to the location, relevant experience and people who are retired or unemployed, have yet to be decided. The relevant weighting to be given under each of the criteria is being examined in the context of criteria used by other local authorities. An application is also to be lodged to TUS for a horticulturist instructor.”

Cllr Connolly further confirmed that it has been decided to grant a licence to applicants for a 12-month period and that consideration is being given to the possibility of joint applications.
