Spirit of Voice Festival returns next month

THE SPIRIT Of Voice Festival, the annual celebration of all styles of singing, the spoken word, and the human voice in general, returns from Friday November 11 to Sunday 13.

Highlights at this year’s festival include The Bugle Babes, African gospel soul singer Toluking, songwriter and actress Nina Viertel, and Tuam singer-songwriter Seamus Ruttledge.

The festival will be launched in Tully’s Bar, Kinvara, this Saturday at 10.30pm which will include a DJ set from Ali G and Cantina Bop, along with live music from Litehaus.

The festival proper begins on Friday November 11 with a concert in The Rowing club, Woodquay,, featuring The Bugle Babes, a female trio led by singer Derby Browne, who perform music by the Andrews Sisters and pop hits of the 1940s; baritone Darragh McGann with Barbershop quartet Chill singing harmonies; Berlin songwriter/actress Nina Viertel; and sean nós from Connemara’s Orlaith Ni Mheachair.

On Saturday 12 from 9pm, again in The Rowing Club there will be performances by Madu, led by Irish/Malaysian brother and sister team Salim and Aminah, whose music mixes Malaysian styles with roots reggae, dance hall, and dub; Beatboxer Whitenoise; singer Casey Leigh; and Swedish blues-rock singer Erika Feeney.

The Crane will host the final concert of the festival at 8pm on Sunday 13, featuring Tuam singer-songwriter Seamus Ruttledge, whose new album Songs To Have With Your Tea is just out; ESB Feis Ceoil 2011 winner Kayla McDonagh from Connemara; Germany’s Nina Viertel; and soloist Barbara Vulso.

The annual voice workshops will be held on Saturday 12, with Kundalini yoga voice chants from Nina Viertel; singing and vocal workshops with Helen Webb and Mallika McCarthy; and a beatbox workshop with Cian Sayles (aka Whitenoise Beatbox ).
