Daly challenges for European title

Galway kickboxer Eric Daly returns to his home town to challenge for the vacant IKF European superlightweight full contact kickboxing title this Saturday at the Gort Community Centre.

Daly takes on European ranked No 1 contender Sarwar Hamid who fights out of Kicks Gym in Brighton, England, in the headline fight of 19 scheduled on the card.

Daly, who fights out of the Galway Black Dragon Kickboxing Gym, is the current All Ireland and Five Nations champion and this will be his second attempt at the European title belt.

His first attempt was on March 12 in the Black Box Theatre where he took on the British champion Howard Hogg rom Cardiff and this fight, considered by many to be a classic, ended in a draw.

Daly’s opponent Sarwar Hamid is a tough seasoned fighter so fight fans can expect a real battle.

Also on the undercard will be four All Ireland title fights. Two Galway fighters are looking for gold as Jason Mannion from Castlepark takes on Irish featherweight champion Ciilin Boyce from Donegal and Claregalway’s Martin Murray will face Dungarvan’s Keith Moroney for the junior welterweight belt.

Current world champion Cathal Manning will switch rule styles in a four-round boxing match under Queensbury rules, while Aidan Brooks will take on Belfast man Peter Rusk in a pro rules K-1 fight.

World champ Nikki Collins is also on the card and she takes on Argentinian Muay Thai fighter Maria Gonzales and crowd pleaser Gary Manogue takes on Kilkenny man Kayne Nelson in a scheduled four-rounder.

Tickets are on sale now from the fighters on the card, the Black Dragon Gym, or a limited number on the door. Telephone 087-8119227 for more details.
