Irish Geology Association opens first branch in the west

The first Irish Geological Association (IGA ) branch west of the Shannon was launched yesterday evening at 8pm in the geology museum (Quad building ), at NUI Galway. Activities of the new IGA branch will include the recording and collecting of data on field trips to places of local geological interest, trips further afield with like-minded groups, and involving itself with the conservation and protection of local sites of scientific, educational and heritage interest. On meeting nights lectures will be provided for members by visiting speakers. Annual membership will be €20 per individual, €30 per family, or €5 per student.

An IGA approved introductory geology course will be run at the Moycullen Further Education Centre on Tuesdays, from 7 to 9 pm, beginning on September 20, and will be tutored by Dr Alessandra Costanzo of NUI Galway. Enrolment will take place in Moycullen Further Education Centre next Wednesday evening at 7pm.

The course will cover and expand on the geological aspects of the Leaving Certificate geography course with emphasis on modern Earth science topics and research. It will be conducted over two ten-week terms and will provide a broad introduction to the fascinating subject of geology. The course will include multimedia presentations, discussions, practical work and two field trips and the fee is €175. Students who perform satisfactorily in continuous assessment and a written examination will be awarded an IGA approved certificate. However those who do not wish to sit a formalised exam but who have otherwise supported the course will qualify for an attendance award.

No previous knowledge or experience of geology is necessary and involvement in both the IGA branch and the course would complement each other. Further details may be had by emailing [email protected], visiting www.geology.ie
