Massive fire destroys Shannon Oaks hotel

Extensive damage was caused to a hotel in Portumna after a fire broke out yesterday afternoon spreading quickly through the premises which was evacuated.

It is understood that up to six units of the Galway and Tipperary fire services were called in to tackle the blaze at the Shannon Oaks Hotel at St Joseph’s Road after the alarm was raised shortly after 1pm yesterday.

The entire premises was immediately evacuated as the flames continued to rage through the two storey building.

By the time this paper was going to press fire services were still battling to get the blaze under control with flames still emerging from the roof of the building at around 4pm.

There were no reports of any injuries, however the incident is thought to be a major blow to local business.

Gardai were also in attendance and it is believed that an investigation into how the fire broke out will be carried out.
