The Jarlath McInerney Memorial Cycling Event is taking place again this year around the Claddagh on Saturday June 25, and is in aid of Crumlin Children’s Hospital.

Jarlath McInerney, a prominent figure in the city who died tragically in December 2009, was instrumental in raising funds for Crumlin Children’s Hospital through cycling and walking events. The event, which will kick off at 4pm beside the Claddagh Hall, is organised by Galway Bay Cycling Club with the support of the Galway Solicitors’ Bar Association and is hoped to carry on Jarlath’s great work in raising funds for this very worthy cause.

The event, also promoting Galway Bike Week, combines cycle races for all ages and abilities and will finish up with entertainment and refreshments at the Claddagh Hall. A great evening of entertainment is in store with music from Frankie Gavin and Friends. The Kids Race will include sections for u8, u10 and u12 and registration takes place at 3.30pm.

The Family and Friends race and a criterium for the more serious cyclists will take a circuit from Claddagh Hall towards Fr Griffin Road, to Whitestrand Road, Dr Colohan Road, left onto Grattan Road and back to the Claddagh Hall. The Family and Friends Race begins at 6pm, Criterium One at 7pm and Criterium Two at 8pm.

The roads along the circuit will be closed from 6pm to 9.30pm on the evening of June 25 so parking and access to and from the Claddagh and associated areas will be restricted during that time. It is hoped that along with support from local people the event will attract many cycling enthusiasts from outside the city.

Registrations and sponsorship forms are available at www.galwaybaycycling.com before June 25 and sponsorship forms can also be collected at McInerney Solicitors, Eyre Square, Galway.

All entries are free and contributions can be made on this day to Crumlin Children’s Hospital. There will also be some fantastic prizes raffled in the evening.
