Super8Shots festival starts today

SUPER8SHOTS, the festival which celebrates films, documentaries, and home movies shot on 8mm, opens today and will run until Sunday July 10, with events in Galway city and Inis Oírr.

The festival will feature screenings, workshops, exhibitions, live and experimental music events. The official launch takes place this evening at Bar 8 at 6pm while tomorrow from 10pm the bar will host Superotica, an evening of vintage soft erotica films.

Masterclasses take place on Saturday from 2pm to 6pm with an ‘Introduction to Super8’ by festival director Julien Dorgere, followed by a masterclass in film processing by filmmaker Alan Crowley.

At 11pm that night Ard Bia Nimmo’s will host DJ sets with Alle Farben (Berlin ) and Wiseacre (LA ) with visuals by the Pamphlet Project and artist Clare Lymer. This show is sold out but some tickets are left for Farben and Wiseacre’s perfomance in Áras Éanna, Aran Islands, tomorrow.

The second weekend of events takes place in the Áras Éanna Arts Centre on Inis Oírr, Aran Islands. Events begin with the opening of a new installation by visual artist Gareth Kennedy at 1pm on Saturday July 2.

Áras Éanna will screen 8mm films shot on the Aran Islands and in Connemara in the 1960s and 1970s on Saturday at 2pm and Sunday at 3.30pm. Then at 9pm there is the Super8extravaganza featuring Dublin musician Katie Kim, graphic artist Steve Stapleton, and DJ Ruairi D, and Super8 visuals by Donal Dineen and Mr Weasel.

The third weekend takes place on Saturday July 9 and Sunday 10 and is in collaboration with the Galway Film Fleadh. On the Saturday the Town Hall Theatre studio will host the Galway Wonder Years at 4pm, 6pm, and 8pm featuring archive footage of Galway from the 1950s to the 1970s.

Music fans take note as the Irish Wonder Years, to be screened in the Town Hall studio at 5pm, 7pm, and 9pm, will feature archive footage of Thin Lizzy and Rory Gallagher in action.

On Sunday 10 the Super 8 Competition takes place in Kelly’s from 4pm to 6pm. Those in attendance will have the unique opportunity to view the work of international amateur filmmakers followed by a selection of contemporary Irish Super8 films like Vilain Museau, Moira Tierney, Mr Weasel, Alan Crowley, and Donal Dineen.
